Downton Abbey (2019) is a historical drama film written by Julian Fellowes, the series creator and writer of its TV counterpart, and directed by Michael Engler. Produced by Carnival Films and Perfect World Pictures, the movie picks up where the series left off, bringing back much of the original cast. Set in 1927, the Crawleys are thrilled to learn that King George V and Queen Mary plan to visit Downton as part of their royal tour of Yorkshire. Amidst preparations by the servants, Lady Mary feels Barrow, the house butler, is ill-prepared for such an important event and enlists former butler Carson to assist temporarily – much to Barrow’s dismay. Just as things seem under control, a repairman arrives to fix a broken boiler and takes an interest in Daisy, causing Andy to feel jealous. Soon after, members of the royal staff begin to arrive at Downton in anticipation of the King and Queen’s arrival.
While Richard Ellis, the King’s valet, treats the Downton staff kindly, the rest of the entourage displays arrogance and rudeness. It is evident that they have intentions of replacing the Downton staff during their visit. Additionally, there has been a series of small items going missing from the house. The arrival of Bertie and Edith Pelham, Lord and Lady Hexham, happens to be on the day before the royal couple’s scheduled visit. Despite heavy rain, chairs for parade seating are delivered that evening. In response to this inconvenience, Lady Mary leads a disorganized effort to arrange them for the next day. Fortunately, the weather clears and the King and Queen arrive at Downton where they are introduced to the Crawley family. During their introduction, Violet shares cold pleasantries with Maud; who is not only Robert’s cousin once removed but also serves as lady-in-waiting for the Queen.
