Draft Day (2014) is an American sports drama film directed by Ivan Reitman, featuring Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner. On the morning of the 2014 NFL Draft, Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver, Jr. has a difficult choice to make. As he holds the seventh overall pick, he must strategize how to improve his team while also managing personal matters. Domestic issues arise as Ali Parker, the team’s salary cap analyst and pregnant with Weaver’s child, complicates things. Additionally, Sonny’s father’s recent passing has caused tension between him and his mother. In fact, Sonny had let go of his father – a renowned coach – at his mother’s urging due to failing health, taking full responsibility for the decision. Amidst all this, Tom Michaels of the Seattle Seahawks presents an enticing offer: trading their first overall draft pick for Cleveland’s first round pick in the current draft and next year’s, along with a third-round pick in two years.

Initially, Sonny refuses the request, but the Browns’ owner forces him to make a splashy move in order to excite fans and boost ticket sales. This results in the team acquiring Bo Callahan, a highly-regarded quarterback from Wisconsin expected to be the first overall pick. As negotiations progress, Michaels pressures Sonny into trading three consecutive first round picks. Despite not consulting the rest of the team, Sonny agrees to the deal, causing tension in the Browns’ war room. The team’s coach, Vince Penn, strongly supports their current quarterback Brian Drew and also has his eye on Florida State running back Ray Jennings – whose father previously played for the Browns – for their draft pick. Upon learning that Ohio State linebacker Vontae Mack will be drafted by the Browns with their top pick, he takes to Twitter to criticize their decision to trade up for Callahan.
