Dragnet (1987)
Director Tom Mankiewicz made his debut with Dragnet (1987), an American buddy cop comedy. The film follows the story of LAPD Sergeant Joe Friday’s nephew and namesake, who shares his late uncle’s old-fashioned beliefs. He is paired with Pep Streebek, a street-smart and confident newcomer. Their contrasting personalities clash initially, as Friday disapproves of Streebek’s attitude, appearance, and attire. Despite this, they develop a bond while investigating a strange string of thefts. One of the stolen items is Bait, a pornographic magazine owned by Jerry Caesar. Reverend Jonathan Whirley has been leading a moral campaign against Caesar’s company. As they pursue leads, Friday and Streebek come across a group known as P.A.G.A.N., which stands for ‘People Against Goodness and Normalcy’. They focus on Emil Muzz, an employee of Caesar’s who also drives his limousine.
During interrogation, Muzz reveals key information about a secret ceremony taking place at specific time and location. Disguised as members, Friday and Streebek sneak into the location on Friday and witness a masked leader conducting a ritual with several stolen items. The victim, Connie Swail (also known as ‘the virgin Connie Swail’), is thrown into a water pit with an anaconda. Acting quickly, Friday and Streebek intervene and save Connie while also subduing the snake. They promptly report the incident to Captain Bill Gannon, their boss. However, when Gannon and Police Commissioner Jane Kirkpatrick (who coincidentally is running for mayor) return to the site with them the following day, no trace of the ritual can be found. As a result, Kirkpatrick decides to remove Friday and Streebek from the case.
