Dragonfly (2002)
Dragonfly (2002), a supernatural thriller film directed by Tom Shadyac based on a story by Brandon Camp and Mike Thompson, follows the story of doctors Joe and Emily Darrow. While seven months pregnant, Emily travels to Venezuela to assist natives in the Amazon area but tragically dies in a bus accident. Despite her body never being found, Joe returns to work without taking time to grieve. One night, he is startled by his wife’s dragonfly paperweight rolling across the room – a reminder of her love for dragonflies and her birthmark resembling one on her shoulder. Overwhelmed with memories, Joe begins visiting Emily’s patients at the pediatric oncology unit where one unconscious child catches his attention.
As medical staff try unsuccessfully to revive the child, Joe hears him calling out for him and rushes over as his heart miraculously starts beating again. The next day, Joe visits the child who inquires if he is ‘Emily’s Joe’. The child then shares a message from Emily and mentions the many drawings of a curvy cross around the room. Confused about its meaning, the child recounts a near-death experience involving a light, a woman with an image of Joe, and seeing the cross at the end of a rainbow. Later on, Joe comes across another child’s room with the same drawing. This child immediately recognizes Joe and urges him to ‘go to the rainbow’. Upon returning home, Joe’s parrot suddenly goes into a frenzy, causing damage and leaving behind a wavy cross symbol in spilled soil.
