Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (2011) is an American animated short by DreamWorks Animation, helmed by Tom Owens. It hit shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on November 15th of that year, along with an accompanying short called Book of Dragons. As the winter holiday Snoggletog approaches in Berk, all the dragons unexpectedly take off, leaving everyone in distress – except for Toothless. Unable to fly alone, Toothless receives a new artificial wing from Hiccup as a gesture of kindness, granting him freedom as well. Days later, Meatlug – who Fishlegs had been secretly keeping tethered – escapes and accidentally takes Hiccup along for the ride. They land on an island with hot springs, where all the dragons (except Toothless) have been nesting their eggs. On Berk, Astrid and the other teens discover dragon eggs in Meatlug’s nest and scatter them throughout the village in hopes of lifting spirits. Unfortunately, this plan backfires when the eggs hatch explosively (typically underwater), causing significant damage to Berk.

While on the dragons’ island, Hiccup reunites with Stormfly (Astrid’s dragon) and Hookfang (Snotlout’s dragon) alongside their newly-hatched offspring. As he requests a ride back home, he unknowingly sparks the dragons’ return migration. Realizing that the baby dragons are unable to make the journey all the way to Berk by flying, Hiccup makes a spontaneous decision to utilize a nearby shipwreck for transportation. The Berkians are ecstatic to welcome back their beloved dragons and their adorable new additions, although Hiccup remains saddened by Toothless’ absence. Amidst the festive Snoggletog celebrations, Toothless reappears with Hiccup’s lost helmet that had slipped into the ocean earlier on; an emotional reunion between the two ensues.
