Dragons: Race to the Edge (2015–2018) is an American computer-animated TV show based on the 2010 movie How to Train Your Dragon. It serves as a link between the first film and its 2014 sequel. Announced by Cartoon Network on October 12, 2010, the series was described by executive producer Tim Johnson as having a darker and deeper tone than previous DreamWorks Animation spin-offs. This made it the first DreamWorks Animation show to air on Cartoon Network instead of Nickelodeon. A preview consisting of two episodes aired on August 7, 2012, with the official premiere following on September 5th of that year. Subtitled Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk respectively, a total of 40 episodes aired during the show’s first two seasons on Cartoon Network. The series then became known as Race to the Edge for its third season, which debuted exclusively on Netflix in June 2015. The second and third seasons of Race to the Edge premiered in January and June of 2016 respectively, with the fourth season landing in February of 2017. Following a renewal for a fifth season, which arrived on Netflix in August of that year, the sixth and final season of Dragons: Race to the Edge was released on February 16, 2018 after being renewed once again.
Set between the events of How to Train Your Dragon and its sequel, Dragons: Race to the Edge tracks Hiccup’s journey to maintain peace among the newly coexisting dragons and Norse vikings. In addition to overseeing the development of Berk’s latest addition – a Dragon Training Academy – Hiccup, Toothless, and their teenage cohorts face daunting challenges from treacherous lands beyond Berk and untrainable dragon species. As if that wasn’t enough, they must also fend off adversaries determined to disrupt the fragile harmony between Vikings and Dragons.
