Dreamgirls (2006) is an American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon, and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. It is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name. The story follows car salesman Curtis Taylor Jr., who in 1962 Detroit meets a promising Black girl group called ‘The Dreamettes’ at an R&B amateur talent show. The trio, consisting of lead singer Effie White, and backup singers Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson, catches his eye. Impressed with their talent, Curtis presents himself as their new manager and hires them to sing backup for R&B star Jimmy ‘Thunder’ Early on the Chitlin’ Circuit. As the group’s popularity grows, Curtis forms his own record label, Rainbow Records, using his Cadillac dealership as its headquarters. He appoints Effie’s brother C.C. as head songwriter.
Despite initial success with their first single ‘Cadillac Car’, the group faces competition when a white pop group named ‘Dave and the Sweethearts’ releases a cover version that outperforms theirs. Behind the scenes, Effie and Curtis fall madly in love while married couple Jimmy and Lorrell experience similar feelings. However, Curtis’ plans to steer his client towards a more mainstream sound start to wear on Jimmy’s manager, Marty Madison. When Jimmy’s performance flops at an all-white Miami Beach supper club, Curtis makes the decision to send him on tour alone while keeping The Dreamettes (now called ‘The Dreams’) as the headlining act. Curtis deems Effie’s curvier body and unique, soulful voice as potential drawbacks in appealing to white audiences.
