Driven (2001)
Directed by Renny Harlin, Driven (2001) is an American action sports film that follows the story of rookie sensation Jimmy Bly during the 2000 Champ Car Season. With five wins already under his belt, Jimmy’s success has sparked jealousy from reigning champion Beau Brandenburg, who blames his fiancée Sophia for distracting him from his driving. As a result, Beau ends their engagement and regains his winning streak in Chicago. Meanwhile, Jimmy’s team owner Carl Henry worries about his performance on the track and turns to retired Champ Car champion Joe Tanto for guidance and mentorship. Joe agrees to help and replaces teammate Memo Moreno. Interestingly enough, despite Memo now being married to Joe’s ex-wife Cathy Heguy, the two drivers remain good friends.
In Canada, Jimmy leads the pack with Beau close behind. Despite Jimmy’s efforts, Beau remains in a strong position, prompting Carl to order Joe to pit and hold him there until the leaders approach. Despite Joe’s objections, he follows orders and only leaves the pit just in time to block out Beau and secure Jimmy’s victory. Demille, who manages both Jimmy and his racing business, takes issue with Joe’s role as a mentor, suggesting he stick to being a blocker. Meanwhile, Joe encourages Beau to make amends with Sophia while Jimmy’s relationship with her continues to distract him during the race in Japan, causing him to crash. At a car unveiling event in Chicago, where prototypes for the upcoming season are on display, Beau and Sophia reunite much to Jimmy’s disappointment.
