Drunk History (2013–2019), a humorous American TV show, is based on the popular Funny or Die web series from 2007 created by Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner. The show’s executive producers are Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Each episode features a tipsy narrator, accompanied by host Waters, attempting to recount a historical event as actors reenact their stories and lip sync their dialogue. Initially airing on Comedy Central on July 9, 2013, the show was renewed for a seventh season on August 26, 2019. However, on August 19, 2020, the decision was reversed and the series was cancelled by Comedy Central after six seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic halting production. Along with its international versions, Drunk History has come to an end with its sixth season being its last.

The inspiration for the series came about during a drunken chat between Derek Waters and his friend, actor Jake Johnson. Johnson shared the tragic tale of R&B singer Otis Redding, who died in a plane crash. Waters found humor in the idea of filming an intoxicated person stumbling through a historical event, with actors reenacting the story. Excited by this idea, he mentioned it to another friend, Michael Cera, who not only encouraged him to pursue it but also offered to appear in the video. The first episode debuted on Funny or Die’s website on August 6th, 2007, featuring Johnson, Waters, Cera, and actress Ashley Johnson. The series continued to be released online through Funny or Die and briefly aired on HBO. It eventually premiered on Comedy Central on July 9th, 2013. Prior to filming, the storytellers research their tales while sober and then rehearse in front of a producer before getting drunk for the actual recording. According to Waters, he joins in on drinking with them as a way of showing solidarity and avoiding any feelings of exploitation.
