Duel (1971)
Duel (1971), an American telefilm directed by Steven Spielberg, follows the story of David Mann, a middle-aged salesman on a business trip in the Mojave Desert. While driving his Plymouth Valiant sedan, Mann encounters an old tanker truck that is driving slowly. After passing the truck, it suddenly speeds up and then returns to its slow pace. This pattern continues as Mann passes the truck again and it honks its horn. Frustrated, Mann stops at a gas station where the truck pulls in next to him. The driver’s identity remains hidden with only their boots visible to Mann. In an attempt to diffuse his tense situation, Mann calls his upset wife while the station attendant suggests replacing his radiator hose.
However, Mann dismisses this advice as he believes it is simply a ploy to sell unnecessary parts. As they resume their journey, the truck overtakes Mann and repeatedly blocks his attempts to pass. After teasing him for some time, the driver finally signals for Mann to pass, causing him to nearly have a collision with another vehicle. Eventually, Mann manages to overtake the truck by using an unpaved turnout on the side of the highway. He looks back and waves at the truck before it speeds up and begins tailgating his car. The underpowered Plymouth struggles to keep ahead of the relentless truck. In a desperate attempt to escape, Mann steers off the road, but loses control and crashes into a fence near a rural diner while the truck continues on its path.
