Dumbo (1941)
Dumbo (1941) is an animated fantasy film, produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures. Based on a story by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, the film follows a circus that spends its off-season in Florida’s ‘Winter Grounds’. However, one elephant, Mrs. Jumbo, anxiously awaits the delivery of her baby while scanning the sky. Eventually, a belated stork catches up with the moving train and delivers the long-awaited baby elephant, Jumbo Junior. The other elephants are initially excited until they notice his oversized ears and give him the nickname ‘Dumbo’. Despite this teasing, Mrs. Jumbo shows great love and care for her baby and protects him from any harm.
Due to his large ears, Dumbo becomes a sideshow act. Upon being taunted by a group of boys, Mrs. Jumbo defends her son and lashes out at them with hay bales. As a result, the circus staff intervenes and takes Dumbo away, causing Mrs. Jumbo to become extremely angry and splash the ringmaster with a tub of water. This behaviour leads to her being labeled as mad and put in a cage. The other elephants reject Dumbo for his mother’s actions. However, Timothy, a mouse who accompanies the circus, scares off the other elephants and befriends Dumbo. He then decides to turn Dumbo into a star.
