Dumbo (2019)
Dumbo (2019), an American fantasy period adventure film directed by Tim Burton and written by Ehren Kruger, is a live-action adaptation and reimagining of Walt Disney’s 1941 animated feature film of the same name. Based on the novel by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, it takes place in 1919 Sarasota, Florida. Equestrian performer and World War I amputee Holt Farrier has returned to his previous employer, the Medici Brothers’ Circus, which is run by Max Medici. However, the circus is facing financial troubles. Due to Holt’s wife and co-performer Annie passing away from the Spanish flu outbreak, Medici was forced to sell his stable of horses. Since Holt lost his arm in battle at the Battle of Argonne, Medici hires him as caretaker for Mother Ella Jumbo – the circus’ pregnant Asian elephant. When she gives birth to a calf with unusually large ears, Medici instructs Holt to conceal them out of fear for how the public may react to such an anomaly.
During his first show in Joplin, Missouri, the calf unintentionally reveals his ears and is met with ridicule from the audience, who mockingly dubs him ‘Dumbo’ and pelts him with peanuts and other objects. This mistreatment angers Mrs. Jumbo, who destroys the ring in a fit of rage, causing extensive damage and accidentally killing Rufus, one of the handlers who had provoked her. In fear of public backlash, Medici decides to sell Mrs. Jumbo. Fortunately, Holt’s children Joe and Milly Farrier are there to comfort Dumbo and discover his remarkable ability to fly by flapping his ears, aided by feathers. However, Dumbo is soon forced into a role as a firefighter clown tasked with putting out a fire using water sprayed from his trunk. Amidst a chaotic performance gone wrong, Dumbo becomes trapped on a high platform surrounded by flames.
