Dunkirk (2017)

Dunkirk (2017) is an epic historical war thriller film written, directed and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, showcasing the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II from multiple perspectives. The small number of primarily-French soldiers guarding the perimeter where the amassed British and French soldiers await evacuation find themselves facing an advancing enemy force, shrinking their territory. Despite being outnumbered, each country takes care of their own as they await rescue on the beach. The wounded are given priority for evacuation, despite taking up more space on the ships. However, a major issue arises with only one accessible dock for the destroyers due to enemy bombings. This leads newly-elected Churchill to call upon civilian watercraft to assist in transporting supplies and soldiers to safety.
Within this scenario, four key narratives unfold. In one, Commander Bolton, the highest-ranking British Naval officer on the ground, is acutely aware of the vulnerability of the soldiers on the beach as enemy planes soar overhead. He faces a catch-22 situation where safeguarding as many soldiers as possible means depleting vital military resources that may ultimately be needed to defend British soil when the enemy advances. Another tale follows a squadron of three Royal Air Force Spitfires engaging in intense aerial combat against enemy planes while also protecting ground troops. Despite their own safety being at stake, they must remain cognizant of factors such as fuel levels in order to effectively support the soldiers below and safely return to base when necessary. The third story focuses on two soldiers who meet on the beach and are acutely aware that lingering there only increases their chances of not surviving the battle at hand.
