Duplicity (2009)
Tony Gilroy wrote and directed Duplicity (2009), an American romantic crime comedy starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. Five years prior to this, Ray Koval, an MI6 agent, crossed paths with CIA officer Claire Stenwick at a party in Dubai. Unaware of her identity, he tried to seduce her but ended up being drugged and robbed of classified documents. Their next encounter is three years later in Rome, where they spend several days together at a luxurious hotel. As they consider leaving their government jobs for the cut-throat private sector, they also contemplate leveraging their intelligence skills for personal gain. After exploring different possibilities for several months, such as the competitive market for double-crust pizza companies, they ultimately settle on cosmetics and personal hygiene.
Although unsure of exactly how they will use their positions to their advantage, they are determined to seize any opportunity that comes their way. Claire secures a position in counter-intelligence at Burkett & Randle, while Ray lands a role in intelligence at Equikrom as the handler, with Claire as one of his agents. Realizing that Ray’s new employer will monitor his loyalty, they rehearse their first meeting in New York to appear genuine. However, unbeknownst to them, Claire’s superiors at Burkett & Randle overhear and reveal her true identity as a mole. CEO Howard Tully opts to keep her employed and use her to further his competition with Equikrom.
