Dying Young (1991) is an American romance film directed by Joel Schumacher, based on the novel of the same name by Marti Leimbach. Hilary O’Neil is a beautiful, outgoing young woman, but she has faced challenges in both work and love. Recently, she left her unfaithful boyfriend and now lives with her eccentric mother. One day, while looking for work, Hilary responds to a newspaper ad for a nurse position. However, she is quickly dismissed before even getting an interview. Victor Geddes is a shy 28-year-old from a wealthy background with a strong education. As the story unfolds, Victor’s health declines due to leukemia. Despite objections from his father, he hires Hilary as his live-in caretaker during his grueling chemotherapy treatment. Initially unsure of her abilities after witnessing the harsh side effects of the treatment, Hilary researches leukemia and starts stocking healthier food in the kitchen.

After completing his chemotherapy, Victor proposes a trip to the coast. Renting a house, Hilary starts feeling that her role as caretaker is no longer necessary. Their bond grows and they choose to stay on the coast. Unbeknownst to Hilary, Victor has been secretly using morphine to alleviate his pain. During dinner with their new friend from the coast, Victor’s behavior becomes aggressive and erratic. He collapses and is assisted to bed. In a desperate search for answers, Hilary sifts through the trash and uncovers evidence of Victor’s syringe use. Confronting him, he confesses that he had not actually finished the treatment but wanted to prioritize quality of life over quantity. Disheartened by his deception, Hilary reaches out to his father for help.
