E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) is an American science fiction film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. Aliens from another planet visit Earth at night to collect plant samples in a California forest. Separating from the group, one alien becomes captivated by the distant city lights. Upon the arrival of U.S. government vehicles, the startled creature is chased, causing his companions to make a hasty escape, leaving him stranded on Earth. In a nearby neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, ten-year-old Elliott Taylor becomes suspicious when he throws a baseball into a tool shed and it rolls back to him. Later that night, armed with a flashlight, Elliott discovers the creature hiding among cornstalks. Reacting with terror, he runs away from the scene but decides to leave a trail of candy to entice the alien into his home.
Elliott gets ready for bed and realizes the alien is mimicking his every move. The following day, he pretends to be sick in order to spend time with the extraterrestrial being at home. He has noticed a telepathic connection between them, which becomes evident when the alien startles Elliott and his brother Michael in different rooms by accidentally opening an umbrella. Elliott introduces his siblings, Michael and Gertie, to the alien but they all agree to keep him hidden from their mother, Mary. The curious alien shows off its abilities by levitating objects and reviving dead flowers when asked about its origin. It even heals a small cut on Elliott’s finger with its glowing fingertip. The next day at school, Elliott continues to feel a strong empathetic bond with the alien while it enjoys beer and TV at his house.
