After distancing himself from his hometown, a disgraced professional baseball player who retired due to his own unpleasant behavior returns to his former school as a gym teacher. Desperate to regain his former glory, he attempts a comeback and makes amends for past mistakes, but ends up sabotaging himself unknowingly. While the show’s creators deny that it is based on ex-Major League Baseball relief pitcher John Rocker’s life, they do admit that his attitude served as inspiration. The character of Powers draws inspiration from former major league pitcher Mitch ‘Wild Thing’ Williams, although Williams himself has rejected any connection. According to McBride, the show aims to satirize a region where one can learn Tae Kwon Do in a shopping center next to a tanning salon.
