Eddie the Eagle (2015)
Eddie the Eagle (2015), directed by Dexter Fletcher, is a biographical film that follows the story of young Michael Edwards. Despite facing difficulties with walking and undergoing medical treatment, ten-year-old Eddie sets his sights on Olympic glory. With the support of his mother, he tries different Olympic events but fails. However, his father does not share the same enthusiasm. As a teenager, Eddie remains determined to achieve his dream and first attempts to qualify for the Summer Games before turning to skiing in the Winter Games. Despite showing skill in the sport, British Olympic officials reject him for being unsophisticated. Undeterred, Eddie decides to focus on ski jumping – an event not participated in by the United Kingdom for sixty years. He goes to a training facility in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany where more experienced jumpers mock him.
Against all odds, Eddie trains diligently and successfully makes it down the 15-metre hill on his first attempt. However, he injures himself while attempting a 40-meter slope for the first time. Alcoholic snow groomer Bronson Peary initially urges Eddie to give up, but their shared sense of being outsiders ultimately leads to Bronson agreeing to train Eddie. Despite his past as an American champion ski jumper, Peary stepped away from the sport due to a disagreement with his mentor, Warren Sharp, as revealed by Petra, a kind cafe owner who takes Eddie in. With limited time before the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Eddie and Bronson resort to unconventional methods to fine-tune his skills, resulting in him successfully completing a 40m jump. However, for Eddie to qualify for the British Olympic ski jumping division, he must accomplish a jump from a much more daunting 70-metre (230 ft) hill.
