Edge of Darkness (2010)
The film Edge of Darkness (2010), directed by Martin Campbell and written by William Monahan and Andrew Bovell, stars Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone. Homicide detective Thomas Craven picks up his daughter Emma from South Station, Boston for a visit. On the journey home, Emma falls ill and vomits twice. As they prepare dinner at home, Emma has a nosebleed and vomits again. When they leave to go to the hospital, a masked gunman appears and fatally wounds Emma with a shotgun before escaping. As Craven attends to his dying daughter, he hears the gunman call out his name. At the medical examiner’s office, Craven takes a lock of Emma’s hair as a keepsake before returning to work. He becomes determined to find who wanted him dead when he discovers that Emma had a .45 pistol in her nightstand, making him think she was targeted.
After confirming the gun’s ownership, he learns it is registered to her boyfriend, David. David is currently living in fear due to his past employment at Northmoor, the company where both he and Emma worked. Though reluctant to reveal more information, Craven unintentionally discovers that Emma’s hair contains traces of radioactivity. Upon further investigation, it is revealed that Emma had uncovered Northmoor’s covert activities in manufacturing nuclear weapons with foreign materials. These weapons were intended for potential use by the US government as ‘dirty bombs’ in collusion with other countries. In a moment of distress, Craven burns Emma’s clothes in his backyard and is ambushed by Jedburgh, a British ‘consultant’, who was hired to silence Emma and dispose of any remaining evidence involving her father’s connection to the scandal.
