Edge of Tomorrow (2014) is an American science fiction action film directed by Doug Liman and written by Christopher McQuarrie and the writing team of Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill. The story takes place in a world where an alien race known as ‘Mimics’ have invaded and conquered much of Europe, resulting in the formation of the United Defense Force (UDF) to fight back. Despite their efforts, victory has proven difficult until the recent Battle of Verdun, led by celebrated war hero Sergeant Rita Vrataski. As the UDF prepares for a major invasion of France, General Brigham assigns public affairs officer Major William Cage to cover the offensive from the frontline. However, when Cage attempts to dodge his duties and blackmails Brigham, he is swiftly arrested and demoted to Private. Forced to join the invasion as infantry at Heathrow Airport, Cage is placed under Master Sergeant Farell and his misfit J-Squad, who mock and mistreat him.
The next day, the invasion forces reach a French beach, only to be ambushed and massacred by Mimics. In his efforts to fight back, Cage resorts to using a Claymore mine on a powerful ‘Alpha’ Mimic, resulting in both its demise and his own critical injuries from the explosion. Suddenly, he finds himself awake at Heathrow airport again, reliving the morning of the invasion. Despite numerous attempts to warn others and break free from the loop, he is continuously sent back to the same beach and experiences multiple deaths before returning to Heathrow. However, with each reset, he gains new knowledge and skills from his previous experiences on the battlefield. In order to lead their army to victory, he tries desperately to save Vrataski’s life but she ultimately sacrifices herself after realizing his uncanny foresight. She instructs him to find her on his next loop before her death.
