Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Directed by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands (1990) is an American gothic romantic fantasy film. On a snowy night, an elderly woman shares a bedtime tale with her granddaughter about a young man named Edward, who possesses scissors for hands. Peg Boggs, a door-to-door Avon saleswoman, visits the eerie Gothic mansion where Edward resides. Created by an old inventor, Edward is an ageless humanoid who was homeschooled until the inventor’s untimely death from a heart attack. Left unfinished without hands, Peg discovers Edward and offers to bring him to her home upon realizing he poses no threat. At the Boggs household, Edward meets Peg’s husband Bill, their son Kevin, and their daughter Kim who he develops feelings for despite her initial fear towards him. As their nosy neighbors inquire about the new guest, the Boggs decide to throw a neighborhood barbecue to welcome Edward.
Edward enchants most of the neighbors with his skills and charm, except for two individuals: the eccentric religious fanatic, Esmeralda, and Kim’s supercilious boyfriend, Jim. In return for the neighborhood’s kindness, Edward transforms their hedges into impressive topiaries before moving on to grooming dogs and styling the hair of their women. One kind neighbor, Joyce, offers to assist Edward in setting up a hair salon so he can support himself. However, during their search for a suitable location, Joyce makes advances towards Edward and frightens him off. To make matters worse, she spreads false rumors about Edward’s behavior to the other women in the neighborhood, causing them to lose faith in him. Sadly, Edward’s dream of opening a salon is shattered when the bank denies him a loan due to his lack of assets and legal status as a human being.
