Eight Below (2006)
Eight Below (2006) is an American survival drama film, adapted from the 1983 Japanese film Antarctica. In January 1993, Jerry Shepard, a guide at a National Science Foundation Antarctic research base, agrees to take UCLA professor Dr. Davis McClaren to Mount Melbourne in search of a rare meteorite from Mercury. Due to poor ice conditions, they travel by dog sled. Despite successfully reaching the mountain, they are forced to return to base camp when a storm approaches. However, McClaren pleads for additional time and Shepard grants him half a day, which is just enough for McClaren to locate a fragment of the meteorite. On their way back to camp, McClaren slips down an embankment and sustains injuries that leave him stranded in freezing water with a broken leg. Using lead dog Maya’s help, Shepard retrieves McClaren and they continue their journey amidst dangerous conditions including hypothermia and frostbite as the dogs guide them back to base.
Upon their return, the entire human crew is promptly evacuated while the dogs are left behind. Assured that the pilot will come back for them, Shepard secures their collars to prevent any escape attempts. Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions, an immediate rescue is not feasible. Once back in the United States, Shepard strives to arrange a return flight and save the dogs. However, securing financial support for such a perilous endeavor proves futile. Five months later, Shepard makes a final effort to go back and retrieve the remaining canines. McClaren finally realizes his ungratefulness and uses the remainder of his grant money to fund a rescue mission. Although they doubt the dogs’ chances of survival after such a long time, they are determined to try nonetheless.
