El Mariachi (1992) is a Spanish language American independent neo-Western action film and the first installment of Robert Rodriguez’s Mexico Trilogy. After escaping from jail in a small Mexican town, a brutal criminal known as Azul sets out for revenge against the local drug lord, Moco. At the same time, a young musician arrives in town with his signature guitar case, hoping to find work and fulfill his dream of becoming a mariachi like his father. As Moco watches from his heavily guarded villa on the outskirts of town, he orders a group of Sicarios to track down Azul. Mistakenly, they pursue the Mariachi instead, who happens to be dressed in black and carrying a guitar case like Azul. Only Moco knows what Azul truly looks like. In self-defense, the Mariachi is forced to kill four of the attackers after being chased through the streets.

The Mariachi takes shelter in a bar owned by a stunning woman named Dominó, and quickly develops feelings for her. However, Moco not only funds the bar, but also has his own romantic interest in Dominó. During Azul’s visit to the bar for a drink and information on Moco, he accidentally walks away with the Mariachi’s guitar case. While on the street, Moco’s henchmen capture Azul but release him after discovering that the case only contains a guitar. Later on, the Mariachi is apprehended and brought to Moco, who mistakes him for someone else and sets him free. Meanwhile, Azul lacks directions to Moco’s house and forces Dominó to lead him there or face consequences from Moco. In order to save the Mariachi’s life, Dominó agrees to accompany Azul.
