Elephant (2003) is a gripping American psychological drama film by writer, director, and editor Gus Van Sant. Set in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon at Watt High School, the film delves into the aftermath of a school shooting, inspired by the infamous 1999 Columbine High School massacre. The story follows various high school students as they navigate their lives leading up to the tragic event. One student, John McFarland, has a turbulent relationship with his alcoholic father – evident when he takes over driving due to his father’s drunken state. Upon arriving late to school, John faces disciplinary action from Mr. Luce, the principal. Meanwhile, fellow students Elias (a photography enthusiast), Michelle (struggling with body image issues), and Nathan (a popular athlete and lifeguard) all have their own personal struggles to contend with before the fateful day arrives.
John’s close friend Acadia joins a Gay-Straight Alliance meeting, while two students, Alex and Eric, secretly plan a shooting attack. The film includes flashbacks of them ordering weapons online and devising an attack strategy. In a vulnerable moment, they share a brief shower encounter, confessing their lack of experience with kissing. Their reasons for the shooting remain unclear; the movie hints at possible factors such as bullying, neglect, violent video games, and Nazism.
