Elvis (2022) is a biographical drama film co-produced and directed by Baz Luhrmann, chronicling the life of American rock and roll singer and actor Elvis Presley. On his deathbed in 1997, Presley’s former manager Colonel Tom Parker reflects on their initial meeting and the rise to fame under his management. Growing up in poverty-stricken areas of Mississippi with a nurturing mother, Presley found solace in comic books and music, particularly African-American genres from Beale Street. It wasn’t until Parker, a self-proclaimed modern-day P. T. Barnum, heard Presley’s groundbreaking single “That’s All Right,” that he saw his potential for crossover success. After witnessing him perform at the “Louisiana Hayride,” Parker recognized both Presley’s musical talent and sex appeal.
After Parker successfully convinces Presley to hand over full control of his career, the singer’s rise to success accelerates and helps pull his family out of poverty. However, public opinion towards Presley is divided as Southern Democrat Mississippi Senator James Eastland voices concerns that his music will corrupt young white individuals and worsen racial tensions. In response, Eastland arranges a private meeting where he probes into Parker’s enigmatic past. Despite potential legal consequences following an energetic performance with provocative dance moves, Parker manages to persuade the government to enlist Presley in the US Army instead. While stationed in West Germany, Presley experiences a major loss when his mother passes away from alcoholism, but eventually finds comfort in meeting Priscilla Beaulieu. Upon being discharged from service, he resumes acting and eventually marries Priscilla after a few years.
