Elysium (2013), an American sci-fi action film written, produced, and directed by Neill Blomkamp, depicts a dystopian future where Earth is overcrowded, plagued by disease and pollution. The wealthy inhabitants of the planet live in luxury on Elysium, an orbiting space station just beyond Earth’s reach. Spider, a skilled hacker residing in Los Angeles, operates three shuttle flights to Elysium in order to smuggle individuals seeking access to Med-Bays; advanced devices that can cure any ailment. Unfortunately, Elysium Defense Secretary Delacourt takes down two of the shuttles in space, causing the death of all passengers. She also detains and expels those who do manage to reach Elysium on one of the shuttles. President Patel admonishes Delacourt for her actions and warns against any further transgressions.
As a form of retaliation, she offers Armadyne Corp CEO John Carlyle permanent defense contracts in exchange for a program that would allow Delacourt to conduct a coup and assume the role of president. Carlyle, being the one who writes the program, stores it within his own brain. Meanwhile, on Earth, Max Da Costa, who is on parole, works as a laborer for Armadyne Corp. By accident, he gets exposed to a fatal dose of radiation and is only given medication to help manage the side effects. After getting fired by Carlyle, he is told that he only has five days left to live. Desperate for help, Max and his friend Julio approach Spider with an offer: if Max can successfully obtain information from a prominent Elysium resident, Spider will provide Max with a shuttle ride to Elysium where he can use the Med-Bay to cure his condition. However, Max makes it clear that he wants Carlyle to be the target of this mission.
