Emily the Criminal (2022)
The American crime thriller film, Emily the Criminal (2022), marks the feature directorial debut of John Patton Ford. The story follows Emily Benetto, a resident of Los Angeles burdened with significant debt. Due to a past felony conviction, she faces difficulties in securing a high-paying job and instead works as a food delivery independent contractor. In an effort to earn some extra cash, she is introduced by a colleague to a “dummy shopper” service that claims to pay $200 for just one hour of work.
Emily comes across a credit card fraud scheme and meets Youcef, one of the leaders, who directs her to buy a flat-screen TV using a fake card and ID. The following day, she is assigned a bigger task to purchase a car with a no-limit credit card. Unfortunately, the plan is exposed by the dealer, resulting in a violent confrontation. After tending to Emily’s injuries, Youcef and her engage in conversation about their dreams. Emily dreams of exploring South America after clearing her debts as an aspiring artist, while Youcef plans to invest in rental property with the proceeds from the fraudulent activities.
