Empire State (2013)
Empire State (2013) is an American crime drama film that follows the story of two childhood friends who plot to rob an armored car repository, but are met with resistance from an NYPD officer. Chris Potamitis comes from a working-class family in Astoria, Queens, New York during the early 1980s. His immigrant father was recently fired from his job at a questionable Greek social club after ten years of service. Despite his attempts to join the police force, Chris is unable to due to a previous marijuana conviction. He settles for a low-paying job as a security guard at the poorly-run Empire Armored Car Company, where there is little security and morale is low. A tragic event occurs during one of their robberies and Chris’s partner is killed. However, the company only provides the grieving widow with $5,000 instead of the entitled $50,000. As a result of this injustice, Chris feels compelled to take matters into his own hands and steals one of the money bags he was tasked with guarding, using some of the cash to help his late partner’s family.
Chris’s mistake of revealing the company’s lax security and showing off their money to his loud-mouthed friend, Eddie, proves costly. Eddie boasts about the information to Spiro, a gangster he wants to impress, leading to a foiled robbery that James Ransome, a seasoned detective in the New York Police Department, is tipped off about. A fierce gun battle ensues and two robbers are killed. Then one night on December 12th, 1982, Eddie breaks into the company through the roof and uses coercion to make Chris open the vault. After knocking out Chris, Eddie steals $11 million in cash – the largest cash robbery in U.S history, surpassing even the infamous $5.8 million Lufthansa heist from December 1978. As a parting gesture, Eddie hands Chris $3 million of the stolen money.
