Endless Love (1981)
In the suburbs of Chicago, an American romantic drama film by Franco Zeffirelli, titled Endless Love (1981), tells the story of 15 year old Jade Butterfield and 17 year old David Axelrod. After being introduced by Jade’s older brother Keith, the two fall deeply in love and share a passionate relationship. The intensity of their connection is not unnoticed by Ann, who seems to live vicariously through them. However, David’s presence in Jade’s life creates tension with her husband Hugh, who becomes increasingly jealous and insists that David stay away from Jade. To make matters worse, even Jade’s own brother Keith turns on David by introducing her to someone else. At school, Billy shares a story about his childhood experience with starting a fire at home, which earned him praise from his parents as a hero for saving their house.
Inspired by this tale, David decides to start a fire on the Butterfields’ porch after being excluded from a party held there. Unfortunately, the flames quickly spiraled out of control. Instead of becoming a hero, arsonist David found himself being rescued from the fire by Hugh Butterfield. He was subsequently arrested, and after a trial, convicted of second-degree arson. As a result, he received a sentence of five years’ probation and was committed to a mental hospital for evaluation. Additionally, he was prohibited from contacting Jade or her family in any way. Despite this no-contact order, David continued to write daily letters to Jade; however, they were not able to be sent due to his legal restrictions.
