Directed by Harry Bradbeer and written by Jack Thorne, the film is an adaptation of Nancy Springer’s first novel in The Enola Holmes Mysteries series. As the youngest member of the Holmes family, Enola stands out for her exceptional intelligence, keen observation skills, and insightful nature. Despite societal expectations for women during that time period, Enola defies norms and embraces her strength and independence- qualities instilled in her by her mother Eudoria. Eudoria has not only taught Enola various things such as chess and jujitsu but also encouraged her to be a bold and self-reliant individual.
On her sixteenth birthday, Enola wakes to discover her mother has vanished, leaving behind only some presents. A week later, she encounters her brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock. While Sherlock deems her clever, Mycroft considers her a nuisance and plans to send her off to Miss Harrison’s finishing school as her legal guardian. The floral cards left by her mother hold coded messages and lead to a stash of money that Enola uses to flee in disguise as a boy. During the journey, she stumbles upon the youthful Viscount Tewkesbury hiding in a travel bag. She initially dismisses him as foolish but cautions him about Linthorn, a man in a brown bowler hat who is searching for him on the train.
