Epic (2013)
An American animated fantasy action-adventure film, titled Epic (2013), is loosely based on William Joyce’s 1996 children’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. Following the death of her mother, 17-year-old Mary Katherine (M.K.) moves in with her eccentric scientist father Professor Bomba in Danbury, Connecticut. Bomba has dedicated his life to researching the Leafmen, small humanoid soldiers who defend the nearby forest from dangerous creatures known as Boggans. Despite her irritation with her father’s work, M.K. believes his theories to be nonsense. At the same time, Nod, a rebellious young Leafman, decides to leave his duties behind, much to the disappointment of his strict leader Ronin who had promised Nod’s late father he would watch over him. The kind ruler of the forest, Queen Tara, must choose a new successor and appears at a pool of lily pods where she encounters a relaxed slug named Mub and an aspiring Leafman snail called Grub. However, their peace is quickly disrupted by an attack from the Boggans as soon as Queen Tara makes her selection from the pod.
During the chaotic battle between the Boggans and Leafmen, Tara and Ronin flee on Ronin’s hummingbird mount. They are pursued by Mandrake and his son Dagda, who is killed by Ronin after inflicting a serious injury on Tara with an arrow. Meanwhile, M.K. gets into a heated argument with Bomba about his research and decides to leave. As she exits, she comes across a dying Tara who uses her magic to shrink M.K., entrusts her with the pod, and instructs her to take it to Nim Galuu before passing away. Accompanied by Ronin and the others, M.K. meets Nim Galuu, who explains that the pod must bloom under the full moon’s light that very night. Before Ronin departs for another task, Nod joins the group after being saved from trouble by him. During a deer ride together, Nod and M.K.’s feelings for each other begin to blossom.
