Erin Brockovich (2000)
Erin Brockovich (2000), an American biographical legal drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Susannah Grant, follows the story of an unemployed single mother of three children in 1993. After being injured in a traffic accident involving a doctor, Erin decides to sue him with the help of her lawyer, Ed Masry. Despite their expectations of winning, Erin’s explosive behavior during cross-examination results in losing the case and Ed refusing to take her calls. However, one day she shows up at his office seeking a job, as he had previously mentioned things would work out for her. Feeling sorry for her situation, Ed offers her a paid position in his office. It is here that Erin is given files pertaining to a real estate case involving the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Donna Jensen from Hinkley, California.
Erin is taken aback when she discovers medical records in the file. She decides to speak to Donna, who explains that she simply kept all her PG&E correspondence together. Donna is grateful for PG&E’s assistance – she and her husband have both had health issues, including multiple tumors, but PG&E has covered the cost of their treatments. Curious, Erin asks why they would do that. ‘It’s because of the chromium’, Donna reveals. This prompts Erin to dive deeper into the case. Her investigations reveal alarming evidence – the groundwater in Hinkley is contaminated with a dangerous form of chromium, despite PG&E’s claims otherwise. However, this task takes up several days and Ed ends up firing her. Fortunately, he eventually realizes that Erin has been dedicatedly working on the case all along and rehires her.
