Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
Don Siegel directed and co-produced the epic prison action thriller film, Escape from Alcatraz (1979). The story follows Frank Morris, a seasoned criminal who is transferred to the infamous maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island in the early 1960s. Known for its strict security measures, no inmate has ever successfully escaped from this facility. On the day of his arrival, Morris swipes a nail clipper from the Warden’s desk. As time passes, he befriends other prisoners such as Litmus, who has a sweet tooth; English, a black man serving two life sentences for killing in self-defense; and Doc, an elderly inmate who paints portraits and used to grow chrysanthemums on the island. These portraits symbolize human spirit and freedom, and Doc even gifts one of the blossom heads to Morris.
Morris finds himself at odds with Wolf, a convicted rapist who first harasses him in the shower and then attacks him in the prison yard with a knife. While both men are eventually confined to solitary confinement, Morris is eventually released while Wolf remains behind bars. In another turn of events, the Warden discovers that Doc has painted a portrait of him and other guards. However, unlike the flattering portrayals of his colleagues, the Warden’s painting accurately portrays his cruel nature but has been hidden from view. In response to this insult, the Warden revokes Doc’s painting privileges. Devastated by this setback, Doc takes drastic measures and mutilates several fingers on his right hand before being taken away by guards.
