A film Escape from Planet Earth (2012), created by Rainmaker Entertainment and distributed by The Weinstein Company in the US and Entertainment One in Canada, follows the story of two brothers on Planet Baab. Scorch Supernova, a daring astronaut seeking glory, works at BASA with his brother Gary who supports him on their missions. When BASA’s head, Lena, sends a message that Scorch must go to the ‘Dark Planet’ (known as Earth to the Baabians) due to an SOS call, Gary strongly disagrees because no alien has ever returned from Earth. Despite this, Scorch agrees to go without Gary’s permission causing a heated argument between them. In frustration, Gary quits his job and returns home to his wife Kira and adventurous son Kip. To his dismay, he discovers that Scorch has already gone to Earth through live TV.
Upon arriving on Earth, Scorch stumbles upon a 7-Eleven convenience store and is immediately ambushed by the US Army, led by General William T. Shanker. He is promptly transported to Area 51. Meanwhile, Kip becomes determined to rescue Scorch but Gary advises against it, causing tension between the two brothers. Later that evening, Gary seeks out Kip to apologize but discovers that his brother has already escaped. With the help of Kira, Gary rushes to BASA just in time to abort a launch sequence and save Kip from danger. Overcome with guilt and a change of heart, Gary decides to take matters into his own hands and sets the launch sequence in motion once again, determined to rescue Scorch himself. However, his efforts are short-lived as he too ends up at the same 7-Eleven store where Scorch was first discovered and is quickly captured by Shanker’s men and brought to Area 51 alongside his brother.
