Euphoria (2019 — 2024)
Euphoria (2019–2024) is a teen drama television series on HBO created and primarily written by Sam Levinson, inspired by the Israeli miniseries with the same title from Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin. It delves into the complicated life of 17-year-old Rue, recently out of rehab but not committed to staying sober. Alongside Rue, we meet Jules, a transgender girl searching for her place in the world; Nate, a jock battling both anger issues and sexual insecurities; Chris, a football star struggling with the transition from high school to college; and Kat, a teenager exploring her sexuality while dealing with body image concerns. As these classmates grapple with their uncertain futures, Euphoria captures the teenage experience of drug-fueled parties and everyday anxiety with sincere empathy.
Euphoria, the popular drama series set in East Highland, California, has received critical acclaim since its first season premiered on June 16, 2019. Viewers were treated to two one-hour specials in December 2020 and January 2021 before the highly-anticipated second season kicked off on January 9, 2022. In a show of confidence, the series was quickly renewed for a third season in February of that same year. However, production faced delays due to Hollywood labor disputes and the tragic deaths of cast members Angus Cloud and Kevin Turen. Despite these setbacks, plans are in place for filming to begin again in December 2023. Audiences and critics alike have praised Euphoria for its bold exploration of difficult topics such as child abuse, drug abuse, toxic relationships, hookup culture, mental illness, and many others. The stellar performances of Zendaya and her co-stars Hunter Schafer and Algee Smith have earned multiple award nominations and wins. Through the lives of high school students navigating love, loss, sex, and addiction, Euphoria continues to capture audiences’ hearts with its raw portrayal of contemporary issues.
