Philo Beddoe is a truck driver residing in the San Fernando Valley, sharing a small home with an orangutan named Clyde behind his brother and mother’s house. Philo earns extra money as a bare-knuckle fighter and is often compared to renowned boxer Tank Murdock. One evening at the Palomino Club, a local honky-tonk, Philo becomes enamored with Lynn Halsey-Taylor, an aspiring country singer. However, their seemingly successful relationship takes a turn when Lynn and her camper vanish from the trailer park. Believing he has fallen for her, Philo embarks on a journey to Denver, Colorado – Lynn’s hometown. Along the way, he crosses paths with a biker gang known as the Black Widows, who provoke Philo and Clyde by insulting them at a traffic light.
Philo chases down and claims their bikes, which he then revamps and sells for a profit. Every attempt to retaliate proves disastrous for the culprits. This earns Philo the enmity of an LAPD officer known as Putnam, who he ends up brawling with at the Palomino. Meanwhile, both the Widows and the officer catch wind of Philo’s trip to Colorado and set off to track him down. Accompanying Philo on his journey are Orville and Clyde, who meet a woman named Echo along the way. Echo becomes Orville’s girlfriend and they all make money by arranging fights for Philo along their route. During one fight at a slaughterhouse, the person holding the cash tries to cheat Philo. However, Echo intervenes by firing two precision shots into a side of beef with her .38 revolver.
