Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask (1972)
The American sex comedy anthology film, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask (1972), was directed by Woody Allen. Its inspiration came from David Reuben’s book of the same name published in 1969. As the film opens and closes, a multitude of white rabbits appears behind the credits, accompanied by Cole Porter’s Let’s Misbehave. Overall, the film is made up of seven separate vignettes.
1. Do Aphrodisiacs Work? A jester tries to use a potion of love on the Queen, only to be thwarted by her chastity belt. The references to Shakespeare’s Hamlet can be seen throughout.
2. What Is Sodomy? At his bustling practice, Dr. Ross is taken aback by a visit from Milos Stavros, an Armenian shepherd. Milos reveals that he has developed feelings for a sheep named Daisy. To Ross’s dismay, Milos admits to having sexual relations with the animal but now feels rejected by her. In an attempt to help, Milos asks the doctor to talk to Daisy on his behalf. In response, Ross kindly suggests that psychiatric help might be beneficial.
3. Why Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching an Orgasm? Following their nuptials, Fabrizio invites his new wife Gina to their bed, however she appears disinterested and unresponsive. With time passing, he becomes increasingly discouraged by his spouse’s lack of enthusiasm, and even more disheartened by the stories of his friends’ passionate love lives. Despite tirelessly attempting to ignite her desire, Gina remains unimpressed. Seeking guidance, Fabrizio confides in his priest who informs him there is nothing he can do to assist. Unexpectedly, while shopping one day, Gina suddenly becomes aroused and eagerly initiates intimacy with Fabrizio.
4. Are Transvestites Homosexuals? During their dinner with the parents of their daughter’s fiance Alvin, Sam and Tess find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. While everyone else chats downstairs, Sam excuses himself to go upstairs, claiming he needs to use the bathroom. Secretly, he has other plans – trying on one of Alvin’s mother’s dresses. His fun is short-lived when he hears Alvin’s father making his way up the stairs. In a panic, Sam hangs onto the window ledge to avoid being caught. But his plan backfires as he loses his grip and falls to the ground. As he makes his way to the sidewalk, where his purse is promptly stolen by a passing man, some nearby women rush to his aid and call for help. The police arrive on the scene but Sam stubbornly refuses to press charges, all while struggling to hide his mustache.
5. What Are Sex Perverts? The TV game show ‘What’s My Perversion?’ starts off with a commercial showcasing two football players in a locker room, promoting hair conditioner. When the ad ends, they share a kiss. The host of the show is Jack Barry and he invites celebrity panelists Pamela Mason, Regis Philbin, Toni Holt, and Robert Q. Lewis to guess a contestant’s abnormal sexual preference by asking them questions. The contestant, Bernard Jaffe, who has a tendency to expose himself on subways, answers several questions but the panel is unable to determine his perversion. They speculate that he could potentially be a rapist or child molester.
6. Are the Findings of Doctors and Clinics Who Do Sexual Research and Experiments Accurate? Victor Shakapopulis, a researcher specializing in sexual phenomena, makes a pit stop at a gas station en route to the home of Dr. Bernardo, an esteemed sex expert whom he plans to collaborate with. Helen Lacey, a young journalist scheduled for an interview with Bernardo, approaches Victor and shares that her car has broken down. Without hesitation, Victor offers her a ride. Upon arriving at Bernardo’s opulent mansion, they are greeted by hunchback Igor who opens the door. Inside, Bernardo can be seen whipping Igor before serving dinner.
7. What Happens During Ejaculation? Within the mission control center of a man’s mind, operators are actively managing his bodily processes. The head operator, Tony Randall, notifies the eyes to display his dinner date and confirms with co-operator the possibility of intimacy later on. The sperm prepare for potential launch, hoping it won’t be another false alarm. The main operator guides the man to try initiating sexual activity in his car. Despite efforts from the workers, the penis fails to remain erect as engineers attempt to hoist it up.
