Eye of the Needle (1981)
The British spy film Eye of the Needle (1981), directed by Richard Marquand, follows Henry Faber, a German sleeper agent nicknamed ‘the Needle’ for his preferred method of killing with a stiletto. While in England, he obtains crucial information about the Allies’ plans to invade Normandy instead of Pas de Calais as expected by Nazi Germany High Command. However, due to circumstances beyond his control, he is unable to transmit this information. MI5 is aware that Faber’s knowledge could jeopardize D-Day and closely monitors his actions. In an attempt to rendezvous with a U-boat in Scotland, Faber becomes stranded on Storm Island during a severe storm.
It is here that he encounters Lucy, her disabled husband David, their son Jo, and an elderly shepherd named Tom – the only other person on the island. Tom runs the lighthouse and controls the island’s two-way radio system. Passion ignites between Faber and Lucy overnight due to her husband’s absence following a devastating car accident on their honeymoon four years ago. As a former RAF pilot, he now relies on a wheelchair and is filled with bitterness. When David finds Faber carrying a film canister, his suspicions are aroused. In a ruthless act, Faber throws David off a cliff and later kills Tom after he catches Faber attempting to contact a U-boat using a shepherd’s radio. To cover up the truth, Faber lies to Lucy about David’s whereabouts, claiming he is drinking with Tom as usual.
