Tragically, the killer also takes the life of Mary, Malloy’s girlfriend. Despite his efforts to apprehend the killer, it appears that he has taken his own life. Three months later, Malloy struggles with alcoholism and even attempts suicide. In order to help him recover, Malloy’s best friend and supervising officer Agent Chuck Hendricks enrolls him in a rehabilitation program specifically designed for law enforcement officers.
Meanwhile, Hendricks remains in Wyoming to ensure that Malloy receives the necessary support and care to get back on his feet. During his time at the clinic, Malloy crosses paths with a number of fellow officers who are also receiving treatment. Among them are Peter Noah, a former SWAT member who comes off as arrogant and paranoid; Frank Slater, a British police officer with a cynical outlook; Willie Jones, a homicide detective driven by religious beliefs; Jaworski, a narcotics cop who made an attempt on his life; Lopez, an LAPD officer with a hot temper; and McKenzie, an elderly member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who witnessed his partner’s murder. He also gets to know some folks on staff, such as Hank, Doc’s assistant and mechanic, and Jenny Munroe, the compassionate resident psychiatrist and nurse who forms a special connection with Malloy.
