Eyes Wide Shut (1999) is an American film that falls under the genre of erotic mystery psychological drama. Directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick, it follows the story of New York City residents Dr. William ‘Bill’ Harford and his wife Alice, who have a daughter named Helena. At a Christmas party thrown by a patient named Victor Ziegler, Bill meets up with an old medical school classmate named Nick Nightingale, now working as a professional pianist. The festivities are interrupted when Mandy, one of Victor’s sexual partners, overdoses. Bill assists in her recovery while also being flirted with by two young models and having to fend off an older Hungarian guest’s advances on Alice. Later on, while smoking marijuana together, Bill and Alice candidly discuss their unfulfilled desires.

Despite other men being attracted to Alice, Bill doesn’t feel jealous as he believes women are naturally faithful. However, Alice confesses to fantasizing about a naval officer she met on vacation and even considers leaving her family for him. This revelation disturbs Bill before he is called away to see another patient at their home. Marion attempts to seduce Bill, but he declines. Later, he encounters a prostitute named Domino after leaving Marion’s place. When Alice contacts him, he pays Domino for a non-physical interaction and then joins Nick at a jazz club. There, Nick reveals details about a masked orgy in a nearby mansion that he will be performing at while blindfolded. He also provides Bill with the entrance code to the party.
