F.I.S.T (1978)
F.I.S.T. (1978) is a neo-noir crime drama film from America, produced and directed by Norman Jewison. At a loading dock in Cleveland in 1937, Mr. Gant, the supervisor, hires Lincoln Dombrowsky – a new worker of Polish descent. Gant warns Dombrowsky that any overtime work will go unpaid and any damages to merchandise during working hours will be taken out of his pay. When Dombrowsky accidentally spills some carts of tomatoes, he loses pay and a colleague gets fired for trying to help him clean up. Johnny Kovak – a Hungarian-American laborer – becomes resentful of these unjust practices and leads a riot. The workers march to Boss Andrews’ office where Kovak thinks he negotiates a fair deal for them. However, the next day, Kovak and his friend Abe Belkin discover they have been fired instead.
Kovak and Belkin are approached by Mike Monahan, who was impressed by their leadership skills. He offers them positions in the Federation of Inter State Truckers (F.I.S.T.), where they will be compensated based on their recruitment efforts. Along with this opportunity comes a car for Kovak to use while recruiting, allowing him to also start a romantic relationship with Lithuanian-American worker Anna Zarinkas. As Kovak successfully brings in new F.I.S.T. members, business owners begin to take notice. However, when these same owners try to persuade Kovak into recruiting for their non-union trucking firms, they resort to physical violence when he declines. Despite this setback, Kovak’s success in recruiting elevates him into a leadership position within the union, creating tension with hot-headed F.I.S.T. leader Max Graham.
