The American supernatural thriller film, Fallen (1998), directed by Gregory Hoblit, tells the story of Philadelphia Police Detective John Hobbes and his encounter with serial killer Edgar Reese. Many years after capturing Reese, Hobbes visits him on death row where he is met with a surprisingly upbeat demeanor. During their conversation, Reese grabs Hobbes’ hand and delivers a spiteful monologue in an unknown language, later identified as Syrian Aramaic. As Reese is executed, he taunts the onlookers and sings ‘Time Is on My Side’ by The Rolling Stones. After a series of murders resembling Reese’s style occur, Hobbes and his partner Jonesy suspect a copycat killer. Following leads from both Reese and the copycat killer, Hobbes eventually finds himself investigating a woman named Gretta Milano.
After following leads provided by Reese and the imitating murderer, Hobbes locates Gretta Milano. She reveals that her father, a former detective, took his own life in an isolated cabin after being accused of committing occult murders resembling those being investigated by Hobbes and Jonesy. Hoping to gather more clues, Hobbes heads to the abandoned lake-house owned by the Milano family. In the basement, he stumbles upon unsettling books detailing demonic possession. Amidst layers of paint and dirt, he uncovers the name ‘Azazel’ scrawled on a wall. Curious about its significance, Hobbes turns to Gretta for answers but she firmly advises him to abandon the case in order to protect himself and loved ones. However, after facing a terrifying encounter with Azazel who masquerades as several strangers on the street and tries to take over her body, Gretta reconsiders her stance.
