Fandango (1985)
Fandango (1985), an American comedy directed by Kevin Reynolds, takes place at a fraternity house on the University of Texas campus in Austin. At the party, Gardner Barnes from a group known as the Groovers is seen throwing darts at a picture of himself and his ex-girlfriend Debbie. He then heads downstairs to rejoin the festivities, but not before ripping the photo in half. Also present at the party are Kenneth Waggener, engaged to be married, and ROTC geek Phil Hicks. Phil’s parents arrive just in time to witness another Groover named Lester pass out (and remain unconscious for most of the film) and meet Dorman, a quiet seminary student.
During the festivities, Kenneth unexpectedly announces that his student deferment has expired and he is now being called to serve in the Vietnam War. Gardner, who had received his own notice weeks ago, is not taken aback. In addition, Kenneth shares that he has made the tough decision to end his engagement due to his upcoming deployment. Despite feeling some joy and relief about their shared fate, Gardner suggests celebrating their last moments of freedom with a road trip. The group agrees and decides to make a pit stop at a notorious roadhouse before continuing on their quest to find “Dom” near the Rio Grande.
