Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), a fantasy film directed by David Yates and written by J. K. Rowling, is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). Serving as the second part in the Fantastic Beast series and the tenth in the Wizarding World franchise, it follows the events of 1927. During this time, Grindelwald escapes as MACUSA transports him to Europe for trial. Three months later, Newt Scamander meets his former Hogwarts classmate Leta Lestrange in London, where he also requests to have his travel ban lifted by the Ministry of Magic. In exchange, he must assist his soon-to-be brother-in-law Theseus with finding Credence Barebone in Paris. However, Newt declines upon learning that he would have to work with the ruthless bounty hunter Gunnar Grimmson. Additionally, Albus Dumbledore—who had indirectly arranged for Newt’s trip to New York—asks him to locate Credence due to suspicion that he is Leta’s long-lost half-brother, Corvus Lestrange V.
Newt is joined by his American acquaintances, Queenie Goldstein and Jacob Kowalski. Jacob has regained his memories which were previously erased, while Queenie reveals that her sister Tina mistakenly thought Newt and Leta were engaged. This led to Tina seeking affection from someone else. To Newt’s surprise, he discovers that Queenie had put an enchantment on Jacob in order to bypass the ban on marriages between wizards and non-magical people. After breaking the spell, Jacob declines Queenie’s proposal out of concern for her safety. Disheartened, Queenie sets off to reunite with Tina, who is in pursuit of Credence in Paris. Newt and Jacob quickly follow suit.
