In Ireland in 1892, tenant farmers worked land they could never own and paid unfairly high rents to their wealthy landlords. Joseph Donnelly dreamed of owning his own land, but after his father’s death, their family home is burned down by their landlord Daniel Christie’s men for unpaid rent. Seeking revenge, Joseph travels to Daniel’s home to kill him but only ends up injured. Nursed back to health by Daniel’s wife Nora and daughter Shannon, Joseph soon finds himself facing hanging for attempted murder. As Nora tries to mold Shannon into a refined lady, the rebellious young woman reveals her desire to go to America where free land is available.
When Joseph attempts to leave the Christie home, he clashes with Stephen Chase, the Christies’ financial manager who challenges him to a duel. The following day, after leaving her home, Shannon persuades Joseph to join her as her companion and protector. She then rescues him from a dangerous duel. On their journey to America, they meet Mr. McGuire, who confirms the story about free land in Oklahoma and warns of the long distance they must travel and the race to claim their desired land. To cover their expenses, Shannon reveals her collection of silver spoons. However, upon arriving in Boston, chaos ensues when McGuire is shot and the spoons are lost. Thankfully, Mike Kelly, an Irish ward boss, helps them secure jobs and a room to rent.
