Far from Heaven (2002)
Far from Heaven (2002) is a historical romantic drama film written and directed by Todd Haynes. Set in 1957 suburban Connecticut, Cathy Whitaker embodies the ideal wife, mother, and homemaker. Her husband, Frank, holds an executive position at Magnatech, a television advertising company. However, one evening, Cathy receives a call from the local police station informing her that Frank has been detained. Despite Frank’s claims of a misunderstanding, it becomes clear that he has been frequenting gay bars in Hartford. Amidst the turmoil, Cathy encounters Raymond Deagan in her yard – the son of her late gardener who is taking over his father’s duties. With Frank often staying late at work, Cathy decides to surprise him with dinner one night but instead discovers him passionately kissing another man.
Frank admits to facing ‘challenges’ in his youth and agrees to enroll in conversion therapy. But this puts a strain on their relationship, resulting in Frank’s work suffering and him turning to alcohol. While attending a local art show, Cathy unexpectedly runs into Raymond and engages him in a conversation about contemporary painting, much to the disapproval of bystanders. Following a party, Frank attempts to be intimate with Cathy but struggles and unintentionally hits her when she tries to comfort him. The next day, Raymond finds Cathy in tears and invites her to join him for some errands. Agreeing, they end up at a bar in a predominantly black neighborhood where Cathy is the only white patron present. A nosy acquaintance of Cathy’s spots them together on the street and immediately starts gossiping.
