Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
The film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) was released, based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name. The story follows Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo as they speed through the Mojave Desert in 1971. While under the influence of mescaline, Duke shares his encounters with giant bats and takes stock of their drug supply. In their rented red Chevrolet Impala convertible, they pick up a hitchhiker and reveal their assignment from a magazine to cover the Mint 400 motorcycle race in Las Vegas. However, their excessive drug use causes the hitchhiker to flee on foot. Desperate to reach their destination before any repercussions, Gonzo gives Duke a small dose of ultra-purified LSD known as ‘Sunshine Acid’. He also warns Duke that time is running out before the drug takes effect.
Upon reaching the strip, Duke is fully engulfed in his trip, barely managing to check into the hotel. He sees the clerk as a moray eel and the other bar patrons as orgiastic lizards. The following day, he joins his photographer, Lacerda, for the race. However, Duke’s irrationality leads him to believe they are in a battle zone, causing him to fire Lacerda and return to the hotel. After indulging in more mescaline and huffing diethyl ether, Duke and Gonzo make their way to the Bazooko Circus casino but soon leave due to Gonzo’s fear of the chaotic environment. Later on, Duke leaves Gonzo alone in their hotel room while he tries his luck at Big Six.
