Fear City (1984) is an American neo-noir erotic thriller film directed by Abel Ferrara about best friends Matt Rossi and Nicky Parzeno. They run a management company for Manhattan’s top exotic dancers and handle their bookings at various clubs throughout the borough. Rossi and their top client, Loretta, used to be in a relationship until their breakup due to Rossi’s emotional state caused by accidentally killing an opponent during his time as a professional boxer. Loretta has since moved on to a new relationship with Leila, one of the dancers they represent. However, one night, another dancer is brutally attacked and the main suspects are rival promoter Lou Goldstein, although he strongly denies any involvement.
Vice Detective Al Wheeler is assigned to the case and shows disdain towards Rossi and his colleagues due to their line of work. He is convinced that they have information that they are not revealing. After Leila’s brutal attack and hospitalization, Rossi and Parzeno’s clients are too afraid to continue working. The film then shifts focus to the killer, a stoic young man who documents his attacks and trains in his sparsely-furnished loft adorned with anatomical posters. Though the victims’ wounds have been carefully placed to avoid fatal areas, they still suffer severe injuries. Meanwhile, Rossi and Loretta attempt to mend their relationship while Wheeler begins to suspect that the attacks are not gang-related, but rather the work of a single individual.
