Fear the Walking Dead (2015–2023), an American post-apocalyptic horror drama series by creators Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson for AMC, serves as a spin-off of The Walking Dead. The show follows the initial stages of the zombie outbreak in the West coast, coinciding with Rick’s coma in Atlanta. Unlike its predecessor, Fear highlights the strain already present in the South while only emerging in California. Taking place in the same universe as The Walking Dead, this gritty drama delves into the early days of the undead apocalypse through the eyes of a fragmented family. In a city known for offering escape and concealing secrets, high school guidance counselor Madison Clark and English teacher Travis Manawa must navigate a mysterious outbreak threatening to destroy what little stability they have built. As society crumbles, these two must not only blend their families but also confront resentful, escapist, and troubled teenagers. But as survival becomes paramount, our dysfunctional family must adapt or succumb to their dark pasts.
In September 2013, AMC announced plans for a companion series to The Walking Dead. It will focus on a different set of characters created by Robert Kirkman. A pilot was ordered in September 2014 and it was written by Kirkman and Dave Erickson, with Adam Davidson directing. The show is executive produced by Kirkman, Erickson, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert, with Erickson as the showrunner. Originally known as Cobalt, Kirkman confirmed in March 2015 that the series would be titled Fear the Walking Dead. On March 9, 2015, AMC gave a two-season commitment to the show’s premiere. It debuted on August 23, 2015 simultaneously on AMC in the U.S., AMC Global in various regional markets abroad, and FX in Australia. In the U.S., Hulu has video on demand rights while Amazon Instant Video holds streaming rights in Austria and Germany. UK viewers can watch through Amazon Prime beginning in 2016.
