Femme Fatale (2002)
Femme Fatale (2002), an erotic thriller directed and written by Brian De Palma, follows Laure Ash, a mercenary thief involved in a diamond heist during the Cannes Film Festival. Her target is model Veronica, who wears the diamonds as part of a gold ensemble accompanying director Régis Wargnier to his premiere of East/West. With the help of ‘Black Tie’ and Racine, Laure seduces Veronica to obtain the diamonds. However, things go wrong and Laure betrays her partners before escaping to Paris with the jewels. While there, she is mistaken for Lily, a missing woman from the city. As she relaxes in Lily’s bathtub, the real Lily comes home and tragically ends her life while Laure watches in secret. This gives Laure the chance to take on Lily’s identity permanently before leaving for the United States.
Seven years after disappearing, Laure (known as ‘Lily’) reappears in Paris as the spouse of Bruce Watts, America’s new ambassador to France. While there, she catches the attention of Spanish paparazzo Nicolas Bardo, whose photograph of her becomes highly publicized throughout the city. Meanwhile, Black Tie is released from prison after serving seven years for a previous robbery he committed with Laure. He happens to see Bardo’s picture while in the midst of murdering a woman whom he had seen talking to Laure at a café earlier. As a result, Laure becomes exposed to those seeking revenge against her and decides to manipulate Bardo by framing him for her staged kidnapping. She also manages to start a sexual relationship with Bardo during this time.
